The virtual Pre-Congress Opening of the 57th ISOCARP World Planning Congress kicks off on 28 October 2021 and sets the stage for the much-awaited in-person gathering in Doha, Qatar on 8-11 November 2021. Today's virtual gathering welcomes all Congress delegates, ISOCARP members, academics, urban and regional planning practitioners, and policymakers to tackle this year's Congress theme: "Planning Unlocked: New Times, Better Places, Stronger Communities".
This session runs for 90 minutes. After welcoming words by ISOCARP Secretary General, Frank D'hondt, and a representative from the host of this year's Congress the Ministry of Municipality in Qatar, Masters of Ceremony and General Rapporteurs, Piotr Lorens and Hangwelani Hope Magidimisha, will introduce the theme of this year's Congress and the entire Congress Team of Track and Session curators. Helle Soholt, Founding Partner and CEO of Gehl, will deliver the Keynote Address. This will be followed by a debate which aims to shape a message to the World Planning Congress in Doha and the COP26 at Glasgow. It explores three premises of effective global climate action: that Cities must be at the centre of attention; that Planning must be recognised as the key profession in directing the action; that Planners must change the way they see their mission and role. The event will bring together the perspectives of a variety of professionals from different parts of the world on the roles of cities and regions in addressing the global climate-emergency.
The session will conclude with some announcements regarding the subsequent virtual-only parallel sessions on 28-29 October as well as some practical matters about the Congress gathering in Doha on 8-11 November.
